Lechmere Train with Donuts
As I toil away here at Sean Boyce Studios
one of my many pictorial themes I develop is the continuation of the expression of the grandeur, romance, and adventure of the American locomotive.
And - hey - in this one I also was able to incorporate some of my favorite things: Donuts!

I get so greedy for imagery when I paint Boston scenes that I'm tending to zoom back further and further in order to see more. With this piece I decided to buck that trend and zoom in to find that there is always plenty to look at no matter how far you pull back or how close you push in.

Contaminated by Adam J. O'Day
Sean Boyce Studios is proud to have the works of Adam J. O'day included in the upcoming exhibit entitled "Boston Breakthrough" featuring five local painters.

Terrific Tuesdays
Hi Art World!
Myself and Steven James Taylor have taken it upon ourselves to support the well storied Provincetown Art Scene by ascending to the region every Tuesday for this wonderful summer of 2011 and painting on Commercial Street in Proximity to the newest art institution / phenomenon to augment the prominence of said art scene: Iron Phonix Studio at 398 Commercial Street, Provincetown, MA 02657.
Here is a visual key as Steven is photographed and interviewed by the ethereally charming Carolyn for The Christian Science Monitor's upcoming article about - you guessed it THE PROVINCETOWN ART SCENE!

The Ptown Project
Sean Boyce Studios is proud to announce "The Ptown Project". In an effort to promote Provincetown's newest player; art gallery The Iron Phoenix which debuts on Commercial Street this the upcoming 2011 summer season, Steven James Taylor and Sean Boyce are going to take time out of their busy schedules to paint on the premises of said gallery every Wednesday from now until labor day rain or shine. The artists are looking forward to being up in the action in America's first art colony, recording all the fun on canvas, and causing general artistic phenomena.
Don't feel left out if you can't make it to Ptown every Wednesday (although I do suggest you try) because I'm going to produce a primitive video blog of the situation starting on June 22.
Steve and I came up with this idea today while we painted in the wind at the boardwalk in Sandwich today. The cloud formations were quite enthralling and we got that for posterity (pics soon!)

Congrats all you college Grads!! Thanks for looking at Sean Boyce Art all year posted up in the cities and towns of Metro Boston while you were busy trying to study - I hope my dazzling representational color fields of love didn't distract you too much (not).
Anyway, in my quest to paint a picture of every square inch of Boston before I die I probably got your school into at least one painting so far.
Here's a painting that definitely got a "piece" of The Massachusetts Institute of Technology - get this image into your devices pronto - (and come see it in person in a brick and mortar studio - limited time!!)

Newbury Afternoon Shadows with Victoria Munroe Fine Arts
I started a tumblr blog at the urging of my son, but since Adam O'Day and Steven James Taylor both use blogger I want to keep a presence here.
This piece can be found also at this link on my website.
Oil on canvas, 24" x 36", 2011, Painted entirely en plein aire on Newbury Street in eight or ten sessions, this piece developed slowly and interestingly, constantly informed by the street (and it's inhabitants) in a very improvisational way.
I gave a link to Victoria Munroe Fine Art (and a shout out in my painting title) because I met her at one of her functions and she is a really cool person.

The Art of Poetry Exhibition
at Cataumet Arts Center 76 Scraggy Neck road, Cataumet Village, Bourne, MA 02534-0240
(508) 563-5434.
Live Poetry Reading w/ Bob Zappacosta & Opening Reception Sat. April 2, 2-4 pm.
I based my painting on Rob's poem: Talking Sylvia
There was no
contrast between the skyline
and the vertical steel bars
that lined the Bourne Bridge.
The day was gray -
and a melancholy mist
hung over
the Cape Cod Canal
Now it takes a bit of talent to pour
a shot of Bushmills into one's coffee while driving around one of those
New England rotaries. Jack - was a pro at it.
He also was a pretty good painter when he had to be
and this was one of those times he
damn well had to be. The "check guage" light came on. Jack new he would
have to stop if he was going to make it to Wellesley and
get that contract. So he said his goodbyes to
Alexander Hamilton at the Shell station and drove
the rest of the way alone, sadly, without the company
of anyone famous enough to get
themselves into print. Wellesley, he mused to himself, isn't that
where Plath used to live?
Little did Jack know he would soon be painting
a seven room house
only three streets over
from 26 Elmwood Road.,
the place where she
first tried to commit
suicide.

My Charles Street picture DID sell before I could even post it online so did this, my picture of the building next door to Sean Boyce Studios.

Sorry about the blurry picture - I'll re - shoot soon. This is another painting which (I'm pretty sure) has sold before I've even gotten a chance to properly photograph or post it online.
Good news! I've been moving from the back studio into the front for a few days now over at 162 Newbury Street.
I hope everyone (including myself) loves the new and improved space!

"Megansett Beach with Osprey and Blue Crab"
This piece will be on display at Gallery 333 in North Falmouth this summer June 8-21, 2011, along with a bunch of other brand new local (Buzzards Bay Watershed) scenes by myself.
The show will also feature legendary Cape Cod Painter Betty Carroll Fuller who I consider myself very lucky to run into sometimes in North Falmouth during serendipitous morning jogging meetings. She has so much wisdom and passion to share about art, and she certainly does so with her art as well.

Another wild week on Newbury Street
Gettin' color on Newbury Street. I've been getting ready to move into the front facing studio over at 162 Newbury. I've got about eight paintings going all the time, I've sent out my press release for the world premiere of Ryan SanAngelo's and my upcoming children's book, Bye Bye Balloon, I'm getting ready for the reception where I'll place all the illustrations around the room with the text, so you can walk around the room reading and looking. You'll basically be inside the book. I've been painting around town with Marc Morin also. I've got two going in the new "Concept and Reaction" series with him, one in Back Bay and one in The North End.

"Public Alley 439"
Here's to transmigrating ordinary places to higer levels.
This piece was inspired (like all art) by many things. From the urban settings in my Batman and Spiderman comics which I thrived on as a child (still do), on up to the physical city that I work and live in. When I create the larger image from this study I might name it Back Bay, 12:01 am in tribute to an awesome painting I've seen by contemporary Boston Painter Sean Flood.

Fisherman With Black Waders
Here is a painting, acrylic and oil on canvas, 24" x 36", that I started in 2001 and have just re worked today, causing it to be a painting that's been ten years in the making.
People often ask me "how long did it take you to do that?"
The answer is very difficult to ascertain for many reasons.
One reason is that (and I think many artists will concurr) when you begin to paint; time melts away, becomes irrelevant, or just plain stops.
Another is that it's hard to guage how much time you've spent on a piece if you are working on multiple projects simultaneously, and hop from on to another in a frenzy of production.

"Fisherman with Orange Waders"
I've entered this painting into the members' juried show at the PAAM in Provincetown. I took a risk as it's a bit of a strange piece in a number of ways. I'll find out tomorrow if it gets in or not. When I rolled up into Ptown yesterday it was a ghost town as I expected (February 23, 2011), except when I entered The PAAM. There were about 20 artists milling about, dropping off paintings, filling out forms, arguing with staff and volunteers. There were over one hundred paintings lined up around the walls. It is quite a testament to the power of The PAAM that they summon this many artists in the dead of winter. I saw many New York license plates (well 2 or 3, but still, February). So it will be quite competitive as always up there at the edge of the world.
For more info on the painting go to my newly revamped (and still under construction) website.

Public Garden with Bridge and Both Hancocks
Oil on canvas, 11" x 14", 2010, $910.00
I started this piece in early fall before it got too cold, although this particular day was colder than it should have been, and windy. So I set up in the park on a little spit of land jutting out into the lagoon with this exciting view before me. I was happy to be trying to capture so many cool Boston elements like, the suspension bridge, lagoon, and the iconic buildings in the background. As usual, I had a heck of a time getting the composition to gel properly, with much revision and re - starting in the drawing phase on the canvas which I usually do with thinned out burnt sienna. Once I finally had blocked in the drawing where I wanted it I was so cold that when I hammered in the color, the impetus to get feeling back into my fingers really helped put some "energy" into the handling of the paint.

Installation of "Roxbury in Autumn"
Sam, Sarah, Bruce, Jason, Earl, and myself underwent the precarious job of hanging one of my most important paintings to date in one of my most important venues today.
"Roxbury in Autumn" total framed size: 58" x 74", approximate weight, 50 pounds was hung on a wall about 15 feet above a thirty step staircase at the new boloco opening on Copley Square tomorrow, Feburary 3, 2011.
Sam, Sarah and I held the ladder while Bruce who is over seven feet tall weighing close to 300 pounds hung the piece handed him by Jason and Earl.
If the ladder had collapsed or slipped, all four of us could have been hurt pretty bad.
I can't thank these people enough for risking thier own life and limb to help get this project done.

Bye Bye Balloon
I've been putting in sixteen hour days in the studio for a week now. I'm putting the finishing touches on "Bye Bye Balloon", the childrens book written by Ryan SanAngelo. It chronicles the adventures of a balloon who excapes from the cluster and travels around the world.
It's been an amazing experience to illustrate the book. I've challenged myself in so many ways during the process. One such challenge has been painting animals. In the course of this story I've painted; an orca, bulls, geese, a camel, kowala bears, and kangaroos.
It's also gotten me outside of my usual New England landscapes to faraway places of interest such as London, Paris, Hollywood, and even Toronto (to name a few).
I'm in the process now of organizing a book signing / art reception with all of the original illustrations exhibited. Look for that to happen in Early May, stay tuned for specifics.

So my first born son Cole turns 21 tomorrow. I'm in Boston working at the studio on an experimental batch of 10 stretched canvas glicee prints for boloco of reproductions of some of my paintings.
